Call of Duty. Wow, that name has suffered serious changes these last years. I knew COD had a great way ahead of itself, but I never expected this. I think no one from the original COD imagined it, those true brave comrades from the Allies or those loyal brothers from the Axis.
As in every COD, this one really shines in the multiplayer, a lot more than in the singleplayer. Sure, the singleplayer has very nice missions and settings (not as exciting as the latest CODs, but you know...) but the multiplayer is really where it's at. I played the singleplayer over 5 times and the multiplayer since it was released until now. Only played the singleplayer 5 times, you may ask? Well, back then the singleplayer wasn't 5 hours long or anything like that. As for the multiplayer, yes it's true I still play it with my friends. Actually, I play this COD more often than I play MW2, COD4, etc, a lot more often.
But, what makes this COD so special then?
Well, first of all, there's something about WWII weapons that makes the game much more challenging and rewarding. You don't get the same satisfaction beating a guy with a "Heartbeat Sensor + Thermal Sight + Uber Magazine + Silencer add-on M4 SOPMod" or "Dual Wield Akimbo P90 + Uber Magazine + Faster Shooting Rating + Whatever" you get with a skill-based bolt-action rifle where you have to aim and think over every bullet you shoot, killing a guy with almost every shot. Imagine you're playing S&D (SD - Search & Destroy, the best tactical gametype in any COD) and you're the only one alive with some other noob(s) from the opposite team. Having that noob running towards you spamming shots in a 71-bullet PPSh while you still fire from your rifle and strike a headshot and be the hero of your team while every other player from your team watches you playing is the best satisfaction you'll ever find in a FPS game.
Second, the community. In other CODs these days there's not much of a community, or if there is one, it's nothing like there was in my country's community of COD back then. There were two kind of people joining COD, those from CS/UT/Etc and those from MOHAA. Those from MOHAA were some of the best players of the community, maybe because they knew the weapons already or something. Those from CS/UT/Etc were the worst, and most of them left the game after little time. People didn't even know how to aim with the right button of the mouse. The few of those that kept playing COD learned to play it decently and in time everyone was kind of at the same level, since it was a very recent new game. Myself, I already had played a bit of CS and MOHAA and didn't like either: COD was my true first FPS. Almost everyone knew each other's nicknames and the kind of person he/she was, and we had a lot of wars (SD official league matches between clans/teams). Your reputation in the community would build up with your public server scores, war scores and the kind of things people talked about you.
These two things, allied with country-based dedicated servers and true multiplayer competition (that I already talked about) are enough to make a true FPS shine, things that the latest CODs miss. But if that wasn't enough, the game itself is very solid with good graphics (they're still good graphics in today's standards in my opinion, way better than CS, etc), good performance (I have over 300 fps in maxed settings), with no crashes or bugs or anything like that, nice extras supported by the community over at codfiles, etc. This is one of those games I can't find anything wrong to talk about. It made me become the FPS player I am now, pwning noobs over at the latest CODs who know nothing of the true origins of their supposed "favorite game". COD2 wasn't that bad and WAW was pretty acceptable but as a truly competitive experience they all fail as in comparison to the original, great, senior, honorable, Call of Duty.
I highly suggest at least taking a look at this game, specially to the people who think the name "COD" only means a hyped overrated low-value FPS for retarded kids. "COD" means a lot more than "MW2" or "COD4", it means a long forgotten in-a-many-ways-perfect FPS that deserves a lot more respect than what is shown. It means a game that in fact is fun to play now-a-days, instead of the latest CODs. And last but not least, it means the game I'll play today in a while with my friends, once my friend Dark logs into MSN to make us a cool server.
